Definition & Importance

These are specialized coatings (paints) designed to meet the functional as well as aesthetic needs of autonomous vehicles (AVs).
Beyond just appearance, these coatings address sensor compatibility (LiDAR, radar, cameras), signal transparency, self-cleaning, low reflectivity, durability, and more.
As AVs rely heavily on external sensors, the role of coatings is more critical than in “normal” vehicles: poorly designed paint/coating can degrade the performance of LiDAR or radar.
