Opening Day at Woodbine Racetrack: A New Season Begins

The gates swing open once again at Woodbine Racetrack, marking the highly anticipated return of Thoroughbred racing in Ontario. Opening Day is always a special moment on the calendar an opportunity to celebrate the sport’s rich tradition, reconnect with familiar faces, and look ahead to a season filled with competition, opportunity, and unforgettable moments.

Woodbine stands as one of North America’s premier racing venues, with a history that dates back to 1956 when the current track first opened its doors. Over the decades, it has played host to some of the sport’s most prestigious races, including the King’s Plate Canada’s oldest and most storied Thoroughbred race and has become a cornerstone of the Canadian racing industry. From champions to rising stars, Woodbine has long been a stage where excellence is showcased and legacies are built.

As we begin the 2026 racing season, the HBPA of Ontario would like to extend a sincere thank you to all horsepeople, owners, trainers, grooms, riders, and backstretch staff who persevered through what was undoubtedly a challenging preseason. Difficult weather conditions tested preparation schedules and day-to-day operations, but your resilience and dedication never wavered. The effort and care you put into your horses during those tough weeks do not go unnoticed, and today marks a well-earned return to the track.

Opening Day also sets the tone for what promises to be an exciting season ahead. Fans and participants alike can look forward to a full slate of racing highlighted by key events such as the King’s Plate, the Woodbine Mile, and a strong stakes program that continues to elevate the profile of Ontario racing on both the national and international stage. With competitive fields, emerging talent, and seasoned veterans ready to make their mark, the stage is set for another memorable year.

Beyond the races themselves, Woodbine remains a vibrant hub for the racing community bringing together generations of horsepeople who share a passion for the sport. It is this sense of community, combined with the thrill of competition, that makes Opening Day more than just the first race on the card it’s a celebration of everything that makes racing special.

On behalf of the HBPA of Ontario, we welcome everyone back for the 2026 season and wish all participants the very best in the months ahead. Here’s to safe trips, strong performances, and a successful year at Woodbine.
