It was a milestone moment for one of Canadian racing’s most respected names. John Burness and Colebrook Farms celebrated their 700th career win at Woodbine this past weekend, a testament to decades of dedication, perseverance, and passion for Thoroughbred racing in Ontario.

That milestone victory came courtesy of Princess Jade, a talented and consistent mare trained by Patrick Dixon. The win carried extra meaning for both trainer and owner, as Princess Jade is among Burness’s personal favourites.
“She is such a lovely mare and one of John’s favourite horses,” said Dixon. “I’m so happy we were able to get Colebrook Farms’ 700th win on Canadian soil. John and his farm have been a staple in Canadian racing for so many years. I’m honoured to have gotten his 700th win for him.”

A Legacy of Excellence
Few operations have had as deep and lasting an impact on Canadian horse racing as Colebrook Farms. Founded and guided by John Burness, the farm has become synonymous with excellence in both breeding and racing. From the rolling pastures of Uxbridge to the winner’s circles at Woodbine and Fort Erie, Burness’s Colebroke Farms colours have represented quality for more than four decades.
Colebrook Farms isn’t just a racing stable — it’s a cornerstone of Ontario’s breeding industry. Over the years, Burness has stood numerous stallions, supported the Ontario Sire Stakes Program, and helped maintain a strong domestic breeding foundation. His dedication ensures that Canadian-bred Thoroughbreds continue to thrive at home and compete internationally.
Stars of the Colebrook Banner
Throughout his storied career, Burness has campaigned some of the most recognizable names in modern Canadian racing.
Johnny Bear, trained by Ashlee Brnjas, etched his name into Woodbine history as a two-time Grade 1 winner of the Northern Dancer Turf Stakes. Beloved by fans, the hard-knocking gelding epitomized the durability and heart that define Colebrook-bred runners.
Simply in Front carried the Colebrook name beyond Canadian borders, earning major wins including a Grade 1 victory at Keeneland and impressive earnings exceeding $1.9 million CAD. Her international success further solidified Burness’s influence as both a breeder and an owner.
And now, Princess Jade joins that list — the mare who delivered a symbolic victory that marks 700 wins at Canada’s premier racetrack.
A True Supporter of Canadian Racing
Beyond the racetrack, John Burness’s contributions have reached every corner of the sport. Through Colebrook Farms’ stallion station and breeding program, he has supported local breeders and helped sustain Ontario’s Thoroughbred industry. His consistent commitment to racing at Woodbine and Fort Erie has made him one of the province’s most enduring and respected figures in the sport.
Seven hundred wins is a remarkable achievement — but for Burness and his team, it’s also motivation to keep going. The next generation of Colebrook-bred runners is already being developed, and with horses like Princess Jade leading the way, the legacy is far from over.
From Grade 1 glory to grassroots support of Canadian breeding, John Burness and Colebrook Farms continue to represent the very best of what Ontario racing stands for — heritage, heart, and homegrown success.
