April 29, 2025 - Bev Chubb welcomed the warmer weather to southern Ontario in recent days, thankful to leave the mounds of snow that buried her Shelburne farm this winter. The 30-year veteran trainer, who also owns shares in some of her horses, is almost ready to get her 2025 racing season underway very soon after a that messy winter.

“There were days when there was so much snow the horses were up to their knees,” said Chubb, who beat cancer in 2008 and walked away from a deadly car crash in 2021. “I had to call a neighbour to use his large tractor to plow us out.”
Fortunately, the spring has been decent and horses at Woodbine are close to being ready. “I didn't run a horse on opening weekend but it will get exciting when I run my first one of the year.”
It's easy to cheer for Chubb, an incredibly hard worker who has overcome many obstacles in her life and in 2024 completed her third, straight best racing season of her career.
“Last year was a pretty good year, the horses tried hard,” said Chubb, who won 11 races in 2024 and placed in 22 others. She won 12 in 2023 and had a career season in 2022 with 16 winners.

Barn 15 at Woodbine has over 20 horses in Chubb's care this year, the “old timers, some 3-year-old lottery tickets who haven't run yet” and her promising sophomore Dark Screen who won two of four races in 2024 for herself, longtime owner Richard Okihiro and new owner Greg Secko.
Dark Screen is a son of Ontario sire Big Screen, who stands at John Brown's Spring Farm in Granton. Chubb has trained many runners by that sire.
“They run well and they are very honest,” said Chubb about offspring of Big Screen. “They can be a little high strung.”
Dark Screen earned over $54,000 (US) as a juvenile and he has been buzzing around in workouts this spring. He is eligible for the lucrative Heritage Ontario Sires series that get underway in late June.
Chubb, who also rides some of her own horses, has a super team that includes jockey Juan Crawford and co-owner Tim Orlando.
At the end of that 2022 season, Chubb was honoured by the Ontario Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association with the Award of Excellence.
“She inspires me,” said Orlando. “It's a lifetime commitment for her. It's been a long, tough road, she has had her share of battles that a lot of people would not be able to overcome.”
