Opening Day features 67 thoroughbreds, 8 races, 2 cup races

The starting gate at Fort Erie Race Track will be jam packed with some of the finest thoroughbreds in the country on Opening Day as things kick off with eight exciting races on Tuesday, May 27.

The track’s signature Opening Day $30,000 cup races return, with the Sprint into Summer Cup and the Summer Solstice Cup hitting the dirt for races #4 and #7, before closing out the night with a full field of 12 horses in the eighth and final race.

“There is no better place to be on a Tuesday evening in Niagara than at Fort Erie Race Track, and Opening Day is going to be the perfect kickoff to our summer of twilight Tuesday racing,” said James Culic, the track’s marketing manager. “We start things off with live horse racing, and close out the night with a free concert from The Figure Four, and in between we’ve got all the things people have come to know and love at the track on Opening Day, including some great food trucks, the free T-shirt giveaway, prize draws, and just a full evening of good vibes with friends and family.”

All of the track’s special events are returning again this season, including Fort Foodie Fest on Sunday, July 27 where the track will be packed with Niagara’s best food trucks, Track-O-Lantern on Oct. 13 for the kids to trick or treat around the track, and the two Sundays of fun dog races, Wiener Dog Races on Sunday, July 13, followed by the Corgi and Basset Hound Races on Sunday, Aug. 18.

And of course the track’s premier event, the Prince of Wales Stakes, returns with a milestone anniversary for its 90th running on Sept. 9. The $400,000 Prince of Wales Stakes is the second race in the OLG Canadian Triple Crown series, and will feature a full card of stakes races.
